Nancy Baxter

Senior Adjunct Scientist (Full Status) ICES Central Cancer Research Program


Dr. Baxter is currently the head of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. She holds appointments in the Department of Surgery, Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation (IHPME) and Institute of Medical Science (IMS) at the University of Toronto. She is able to supervise graduate students at the master's and PhD level and has supervised post-doctoral fellows in the past.

Dr. Baxter's clinical specialty is colorectal surgery and her research interests predominantly lie in the field of health services research, with a focus on unique populations with cancer such as adolescents and young adults, patients with solid organ transplant, and patients genetically at high risk for cancer. She is principal investigator of several studies including:

  • a chart abstraction of all adolescents and young adults (AYA, aged 15-21 years) diagnosed and treated for cancer at in Ontario between 1992 and 2013. We will perform a number of analyses with the retrospective cohort that examine the impact treatment location (cancer centre vs. pediatric centre vs. community hospital) throughout the cancer journey, from diagnosis through end of life.
  • a cohort study of all patients who underwent a solid organ transplant in Ontario between January 1997 and December 2009 to identify cancer incidence and mortality rates compared to the general population.
  • a survey/administrative database study to identify patient and provider factors associated with participation in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening since the introduction of the population-based ColonCancerCheck program in Ontario
