Health Equity at ICES

ICES’ 2023-2026 Strategic Plan supports research priorities in health equity and the social determinants of health. By leveraging equity-informed approaches, we will facilitate relevant and vital research and analytics for a positive health system, policy change, and better health for all.

Guidance Document and Framework for Anti-Racist Approaches to Research and Analytics

This document is intended to guide scientists, trainees, and staff on the appropriate use and governance of race and related data to ensure ethical and appropriate research and analytics.

Please note that this guidance does not examine Indigenous identity and data with Indigenous identifiers. ICES has a distinct approach and policies with respect to Indigenous data and works directly with Indigenous partners to ensure its use is appropriate.

This Guidance Document is a living document that will be updated periodically in response to ongoing organizational learning and evolving community needs.

Executive Summary

The ICES Peoples’ Panel

In Spring 2021, ICES worked with the Tamarack Institute and Digital Justice Lab to lead a Peoples’ Panel composed of a diverse group of 54 members of the public to advise ICES on approaches to using race and related data for health research. Through this Peoples’ Panel, ICES sought to hear directly from members of the public, specifically those who identify as racialized, to understand their priorities and values for how these data are used and interpreted. We sincerely thank all members of the Peoples’ Panel for their contributions to the Guidance Document and Framework for Anti-Racist Approaches to Research and Analytics at ICES.

Resources for
Anti-Racist Research

Through the effects of racism, the social construct of race continues to have real and devastating consequences on health and access to health care. Race and related data can expose these inequities when used appropriately and with purpose. Please refer to this library for trainings, readings, and tools curated for an ICES audience to support implementation of the Guidance Document and Framework for Anti-Racist Approaches to Research and Analytics at ICES.

Community Engagement

It’s crucial that ICES research centers health equity to demonstrate our mission of “better health for all Ontarians.” One key component of equitable research is meaningful engagement with impacted communities. Please refer to this library for trainings, readings, and tools curated for an ICES audience to support community engagement.
