Academy of Master Clinicians
Robert Fowler is a researcher at Sunnybrook Research Institute and serves as a critical care physician at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Fowler has assisted or worked with the WHO during SARS, MERS and Ebola outbreaks in West and Central Africa. During the 2003 outbreak of SARS, Dr. Fowler helped provide the first descriptions of critically ill patients and modes of disease transmission.
Eaton Scholar Researcher of the Year (clinical research)
Douglas Lee is a cardiologist at the University Health Network (UHN) and the Ted Rogers Chair in Heart Function Outcomes. Earlier this year, the Emergency Heart Failure Mortality Risk Grade (EHMRG) calculator (created by Dr. Lee) was integrated into the Epic system at UHN.
The Michael Gordon Award for Humanism in Medicine
Stephen Hwang is the Director of MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions and a leading researcher in homelessness, housing and health. Dr. Hwang was the first to quantify the profound impact that homelessness can have on a person’s life expectancy, proving that homeless men are eight times as likely to die as men in the general population.
William Goldie Prize & Travel Award – Research (clinical research)
Sharmistha Mishra is an infectious diseases physician and Canada Research Chair in Mathematical Modeling and Program Science. As a consultant with the WHO, Dr. Mishra was involved in the Ebola response in Sierra Leone in 2014-15. Her team conducts observational epidemiology, causal inference, and transmission modeling studies to tease apart mechanisms that shape heterogeneity and disproportionate risks of infection, severity, and population-level transmission of infectious diseases.
Michael Farkouh Network Leadership Award (Inaugural Award)
Nick Daneman is a clinician scientist who leads the Infectious Diseases team in the Department of Medicine, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and an infection prevention physician at Public Health Ontario. Dr. Daneman’s research focuses on optimizing the prevention and treatment of healthcare associated infection, with particular interest in Clostridium difficile infections and antibiotic stewardship.
