Dr. Gillian Hawker, a senior adjunct scientist in the ICES Chronic Disease & Pharmacotherapy Research Program, has been named the 2017 recipient of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) May Cohen Award for Women Mentors. The award will be presented at the CMA annual meeting in August.
A clinician-scientist and two-term physician-in-chief of medicine at Women’s College Hospital, Dr. Hawker was appointed Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor and Chair of Medicine at the University of Toronto in July 2014, where she made “mentorship across the academic lifespan” a departmental strategic priority and created the inaugural position of vice-chair, mentorship, equity & diversity. In 2010, the Women’s College Research Institute recognized Dr. Hawker with the Distinguished Senior Mentor Award, and in 2013, the Department of Medicine awarded her the Robert Hyland Award for Excellence in Mentorship. In 2014, she was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
Dr. Hawker’s research at ICES focuses on the subjects of musculoskeletal and joint diseases, healthcare access, and chronic diseases and conditions.
