Project ID: P2023-176 / 2024 0970 350 000
Research Question/Objectives: The prevalence of complications and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) of patients with SCD in the Canadian population is not well researched in the scientific literature. Patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs often seek medical care in emergency rooms and hospitals. Population-based studies using administrative healthcare databases are useful for identifying people living with rare diseases such as SCD and studying the associated burden of disease. This study will aim to identify patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and describe their clinical and economic burden using administrative datasets
Primary Objectives:
1. Describe demographic characteristics of patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and matched controls
2. Describe treatment patterns of patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs during follow-up
3. Assess the all-cause mortality rate in patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and matched controls during follow-up
4. Estimate the prevalence and the rate of clinical complications in the patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and in matched controls during follow-up
5. Determine HCRU of patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and matched controls during follow-up
Exploratory Objective:
1. Compare mortality and HCRU between patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and matched controls in Ontario
