The Ovarian Cancer Observatory: prevention impact and learning from opportunistic salpingectomy (OS)
Summary
Project ID: 2023-1112/ TRIM 2025 0970 386 000
Principle Investigator: Gillian Hanley
Description: The removal of fallopian tubes in women undergoing gynecological surgery (opportunistic salpingectomy) is being recommended to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. The project team will investigate whether the relevant procedure is an effective ovarian cancer prevention strategy by determining whether women who have undergone opportunistic salpingectomy are at lower risk of ovarian cancer (specifically high grade serous carcinoma) than women who have not undergone opportunistic salpingectomy. The project team aims to examine only opportunistic salpingectomy (more carefully define the included groups) and extend the follow-up past 2019 to capture more truly opportunistic salpingectomies.
