Use of emergency departments in Ontario by persons experiencing homelessness
Summary
Homeless patients require a higher level of care that is not available in an emergency department. The knowledge user seeks to determine when an intervention such as peer support workers should be available in the emergency department to homeless patients in the Niagara peninsula. The evidence gathered is intended to (1) shed light on how peer support workers influence homeless patient behaviours with regards to discharge, follow up and readmission to the emergency department, and (2) shape the way homeless patients are serviced in the emergency department as a marginalized group.
