Impact of a mental health and addictions emergency department (ED) diversion program on ED utilization: Phase 1
Summary
The provincial government is exploring how to support care for patients outside the emergency department. The proposed alternative models to care would allow non-emergent patients to be transported to other health care settings more suited to their needs. Through a phased pilot approach, patients whose medical needs can be addressed by community-based care will be transported by paramedics to non-ED/hospital health care facilities. Evaluative evidence for the safety, effectiveness and cost-benefit perspectives will be provided to inform the Ministry’s decision making on permanent implementation.
