In Ontario, many community hospitals are located in suburban and rural areas and may serve patient populations with distinct sociodemographic and clinical characteristics relative to their academic hospital counterparts. Studies have shown that patients from rural/suburban community hospitals have reduced access to subspecialized care and have to travel further.
