Summary
Muskoka is a largely rural region of Ontario with a high influx of seasonal residents who create additional demand on local health care services. As a result, two hospitalists (physicians who specialize in the practice of hospital medicine) were made available to provide weekly care to all inpatients in efforts to reduce the workload and ensure support. Data will be gathered on a comparative basis using a pre- and post-study design of a two-hospitalists-per-week option. The research evidence gathered will be used to identify the best course of physician allocation to achieve optimal levels of patient care, cost and physician quality of life.
