Adjunct Scientist ICES Central Primary Care & Health Systems Research Program
Dr. Jonathan Persitz is a dual fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand and wrist surgery at Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto, cross-appointed to the Divisions of Orthopaedic Surgery and Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, and a surgeon-investigator within the Schroeder Arthritis Institute at University Health Network.
He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Yitzhak Shamir Medical Center in Israel, affiliated with Tel Aviv University, followed by fellowship training in hand, wrist, and peripheral nerve surgery at Toronto Western Hospital. In addition, he earned a Master of Science in Health Systems Research from the University of Toronto’s Institute of Medical Science.
Dr. Persitz’s research program focuses on clinical outcomes and health systems research in hand and wrist trauma. He applies rigorous epidemiologic and population-based methodologies to evaluate patient outcomes, complications, reoperations, resource utilization, and variation in surgical practice. By integrating detailed clinical data with linked provincial administrative health databases, his work identifies patient-, injury-, surgeon-, and system-level determinants of outcome variation. These findings inform quality improvement initiatives, optimize care pathways, and support evidence-based policy strategies aimed at enhancing performance and value in musculoskeletal care delivery at the population level.
Dr. Persitz also serves as the Educational Program Director of the Hand Program at University Health Network, where he leads curriculum development and resident and fellow training. He has received numerous teaching awards recognizing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
