Topic: Antenatal corticosteroids: Are we ready to change?

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the actions of glucocorticoids on the developing fetus and those at risk for preterm birth.
  2. Review issues of preterm birth and the current status of use of antenatal corticosteroids (ACS): benefits to the preterm infant <28 completed weeks gestation.
  3. Understand the expanded use of ACS; perceived benefits to the later preterm infants.
  4. Appreciate the data on long term neurodevelopmental harm associated with antenatal corticosteroids (in animals and in humans).
  5. Present options for future study of antenatal corticosteroids.
