Biography

Dr. Liisa Jaakkimainen is a senior core scientist and scientific lead of the Primary Care and Health Systems Research Program (PCHS) at ICES. She is also a family physician at the Sunnybrook Academic Family Health Team and an associate professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, and the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation.

Dr. Jaakkimainen’s research interests include examining primary healthcare access, continuity of care, primary healthcare indicators and benchmarks, measuring wait times from primary to specialist care, improving the coordination of care in primary care, caring for marginalized and frail seniors in the community, and performance feedback to primary care providers.

In 2006, Dr. Jaakkimainen co-lead the report on "Primary Care in Ontario: An ICES Atlas", which describes the state of primary care health services in Ontario between 1992/93 and 2002/03, prior to the introduction of primary care reform initiatives in Ontario.  In 2014, she published a study on “measuring the time between a family physician’s referral and the appointment with a specialist”, using the Electronic Medical Record Administrative data Linked Database (EMRALD) that consists of clinically relevant information derived from electronic medical records (EMRs) maintained by family physicians practicing in Ontario.

Dr. Jaakkimainen earned her medical degree at McMaster University and completed her family medicine residency at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre from the University of Toronto.
