Suicidal behaviour and healthcare service utilization prior to death in Waterloo Region
Summary
A recent health status report by the knowledge user showed that rates of ED visits for self-harm in the Waterloo Region are higher than the provincial average and increasing over time. To address this, the knowledge user, in collaboration with the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council, sought to better understand the profiles of those dying by suicide and what services, if any, are being used by those at risk of suicide. By combining indicators such as level of education, income, employment status and gender identity/sexual orientation with qualitative research findings, the knowledge user will determine how to implement more effective suicide prevention activities in the region.
