Robyn Rowe, a PhD student in the rural and northern health program at Laurentian University, has won the first scholarship awarded by the Indigenous Mentorship Network of Ontario. The scholarship is a part of the Indigenous Mentorship Network Program, which is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to provide emerging and early-career researchers with culturally relevant learning opportunities and tailored mentoring. ICES will host one Indigenous scholar per year over the five years of the program.
On learning of her successful application, Robyn said, “The support that has been extended to me by the Indigenous Mentorship Network and ICES is an incredible honour. I am a mother of three and a student. This award will ease my financial burden and allow me to focus more on the completion of my degree and my goal of being a mixed-methods Indigenous health researcher.”
Robyn is Anishinaabe-kwe and a member of Matachewan First Nation with familial roots on Bear Island, Temagami. She is passionate about conducting community-based research on health issues that matter to First Nations populations. Her doctoral research, which includes community engagement and collaboration as key processes, focuses on the mental wellness of First Nations youth.
