Timely access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is of concern to patients, healthcare providers and governments. Long and growing wait times have recently been reported by various health organizations. However, despite the focus on health system accountability, comprehensive and timely information about access to, and use of, MRI in Ontario is not available.
This report examines MRI utilization in the province and evaluates appropriateness of use and wait times using available data. A series of recommendations are provided that would help to ensure that the necessary information is collected to support informed decision-making regarding MRI services in Ontario.
