Research Programs

Research activities at ICES are organized into eight Research Programs, each of which is led by an ICES scientist program leader.

Overview

These Research Programs provide an administrative home for ICES scientists and their projects as well as program staff, and also support strategic initiatives and external partnerships in the content area of the program. ICES researchers collaborate within and across these programs, which span a wide range of topics and disciplines focused on populations, care sectors and clinical areas. Some scientists are cross-appointed to multiple programs.

Our People

ICES has close to 300 scientists, many of whom have achieved international recognition in their fields. A number of ICES scientists are practicing physicians who understand the everyday challenges of healthcare delivery; others are methodologists and statisticians whose expertise in analytical methods helps drive leading-edge investigations that have a global impact.

Research Priorities

Research projects at ICES are administered through the framework of ICES’ research program structure, yet they are carried out within a broader context encompassing five overarching research priorities that hold significant strategic value for the organization. They include:

  • Data science and methods: Focuses on big data analytics, novel linkage methods, data visualization and data validation as well as partnerships with computer and data scientists in the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • Health equity and social determinants of health: Involves partnerships with government ministries and stakeholders involved in the integration of health and non-health data, as well as the development of a race and ethnicity data framework to provide ICES researchers with guidance on the appropriate and ethical use and governance of these data.
  • Health system evaluation and interjurisdictional comparisons: Includes working with partners to develop a national platform for multi-provincial/territorial research as part of Health Data Research Network Canada (HDRN), and collaborating with international researchers comparing health services and outcomes across countries.
  • Indigenous health: Involves a commitment to working closely with Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) partners and communities to support Indigenous-driven research.
  • Policy evaluation: Helps to inform policy and decision makers through the use of ICES data, research analytics and evaluation.
