Project title: ELEGANCE UC: a mixed-methods analysis of patient experience and outcomes

Principle Investigator: Mantaj Brar/Anthony DeBuck van Overstraeten

Description: Inflammatory bowel disease, comprising mainly of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease. is a chronic inflammatory disorder. To date, its precise pathogenesis remains unclear, although factors like immune dysregulation, genetic susceptibility and alterations in microbiota have been thought to be involved. Studies have shown that the appendix may be involved in the pathogenesis of UC. However, the exact nature of the relationships between the appendix and UC is unknown, due to contradictory evidence. Therefore, the project team aims to evaluate associations between appendectomy and UC progression and outcome.

Furthermore, ileal pouch anal-anastomosis (IPAA) remains standard treatment to avoid permanent ileostomy among UC patients. However, it is unclear whether changes in clinical outcomes for UC patients across Ontario is due to modifications in surgical technique to date or differences in the level of expertise over time. Therefore, the project team aims to obtain a better understanding of changes in clinical outcomes of IPAA over time, across Ontario.
