Improving health is not only about reducing death from disease but also about maintaining a high health-related quality of life. This research atlas indicates that Ontarians as a whole are living longer and are in better health. Its findings show that life expectancy in Ontario increased by one year (to 78.8 years) over the study period (1990 to 1997). However, population health status varied considerably among health planning regions, and this disparity has grown since 1990.
