Burden of illness of sickle cell disease with recurrent vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) in Ontario

Research Question/Objectives:

1. To describe demographic characteristics of patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and matched controls
2. To describe treatment patterns of patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs during follow-up
3. To assess the all-cause mortality rate in patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and matched controls during follow-up
4. To estimate the prevalence and the rate of clinical complications in the patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and in matched controls during follow-up
5. To determine HCRU of patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and matched controls during follow-up

Additionally, the study will examine the following exploratory objective:

1. To compare mortality and HCRU between patients with SCD with recurrent VOCs and matched controls in Ontario
