Moreover, they often suffer from residual confounding and selection bias. One approach which can providing more meaningful analyses is to compare the effectiveness of contemporary management strategies to historical cohorts receiving primary treatments, eliminating the selection bias and confounding inherent in comparing the two treatments directly.
