These symptoms could alter driving skills and increase the risk of a motor vehicle accident. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI worry that sometimes a concussion requires more recovery time than most people realize,\u201d says Dr. Donald Redelmeier, scientist at ICES and Sunnybrook Research Institute. \u201cRushing things might lead to another injury including a life-threatening traffic crash.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Key findings:<\/span><\/b><span ambulance\u00a0calls<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">59,978 days in hospital<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">$835 million<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in medical costs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some\u00a0limitations\u00a0of the study\u00a0include\u00a0the lack of data on\u00a0concussion\u00a0severity,\u00a0as well as other\u00a0factors that predispose patients to concussions\u00a0as well as\u00a0contribute\u00a0to traffic crashes.\u00a0While\u00a0the findings cannot\u00a0establish\u00a0cause and effect,\u00a0concussions can\u00a0lead to\u00a0symptoms\u00a0that increase\u00a0the risk of\u00a0a\u00a0serious\u00a0traffic crash.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThese results highlight the importance of traffic safety\u00a0following a\u00a0concussion as well as preventing concussions in the first place,\u201d says Robert\u00a0Tibshirani,\u00a0a\u00a0professor of\u00a0statistics at Stanford University\u00a0and\u00a0also\u00a0a co-author of the study.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers recommend\u00a0patients\u00a0treat\u00a0insomnia, headaches, depression,\u00a0or substance misuse\u00a0and\u00a0also\u00a0avoid\u00a0high-speed trips during late-night hours in\u00a0bad weather\u00a0during\u00a0the\u00a0first month after a concussion.\u00a0Clinicians\u00a0should also warn patients\u00a0about road\u00a0traffic\u00a0safety\u00a0after a\u00a0concussion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study \u201cConcussions and risk of a subsequent traffic crash: retrospective cohort analysis in Ontario, Canada\u201d is in the\u00a0November\u00a0issue of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">BMJ Open<\/span><\/i><span
