{"id":21678,"date":"2025-04-14T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-14T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ices.on.ca\/?post_type=news_release&#038;p=21678"},"modified":"2025-04-14T09:31:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T13:31:20","slug":"hospital-visits-for-cannabis-use-linked-to-higher-dementia-risk","status":"publish","type":"news_release","link":"https:\/\/www.ices.on.ca\/fr\/news-releases\/hospital-visits-for-cannabis-use-linked-to-higher-dementia-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Hospital visits for cannabis use linked to higher dementia risk, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ottawa, ON, April 14, 2025<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Individuals with an emergency department (ED) visit or hospitalization due to cannabis were at 23% and 72% greater risk of a new dementia diagnosis within five years compared to individuals with an ED visit or hospitalization for any other reason or the general population, according to a new study published in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">JAMA Neurology<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLong-term and heavy cannabis use has been associated with memory problems in midlife along with changes in brain structure associated with dementia,\u201d says <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Daniel Myran, a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canada Research Chair in Social Accountability at the University of Ottawa, ICES Adjunct Scientist, Investigator at the Bruy\u00e8re Health Research Institute, and Associate Scientist at The Ottawa Hospital. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe set out to estimate the risk of being diagnosed with dementia in a group of people whose cannabis use resulted in a visit to the emergency room or required a hospitalization for treatment.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study included 6 million adults aged 45 years or older from Ontario, Canada, who had no history of dementia when they entered the study cohort between 2008 and 2021. The individuals were followed until 2022.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Health data held at ICES were used to compare new diagnoses of dementia for individuals with patterns of cannabis use that required acute care, defined as a visit to the emergency department (ED) or hospitalization. First, while they observed an association between patterns of cannabis use severe enough to lead to an acute healthcare visit they did not examine patterns of cannabis use that did not require acute medical care. Second, the findings do not show that cannabis use causes dementia.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While evidence on the association between cannabis use and dementia continues to increase, the authors highlight potential mechanisms through which cannabis might result in dementia.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cRegular cannabis use might directly increase the risk of dementia through changes in brain structure.
