{"id":20674,"date":"2024-11-13T11:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T16:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ices.on.ca\/?post_type=news_release&#038;p=20674"},"modified":"2024-11-13T08:59:16","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T13:59:16","slug":"psychedelic-use-linked-to-increased-risk-of-schizophrenia-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"news_release","link":"https:\/\/www.ices.on.ca\/fr\/news-releases\/psychedelic-use-linked-to-increased-risk-of-schizophrenia-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Psychedelic use linked to increased risk of schizophrenia, study finds\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ottawa, ON, November 13, 2024<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u2013 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Individuals with emergency department visits involving hallucinogen use are at high risk of developing schizophrenia, according to a new study from researchers at <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ICES, <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Ottawa Hospital, University of Ottawa\u2019s Department of Family Medicine<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bruy\u00e8re Health Research Institute.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These findings come as psychedelics, a type of hallucinogen, grow in popularity across North America in both recreational and therapeutic contexts. Hallucinogens include drugs such as psilocybin, LSD, DMT (Ayahuasca), and MDMA (Ecstasy).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study, which followed over 9.2 million individuals in Ontario, Canada, found that those with a hallucinogen-related emergency department (ED) visit had a 21-fold increased risk of developing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">schizophrenia <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">compared to the general population.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even after considering an individual\u2019s co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, the study found a 3.5-fold increased risk of schizophrenia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur findings underscore a concerning link between hallucinogen use that requires care in the emergency room and increased risk of schizophrenia,\u201d says Dr. Daniel Myran, a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canada Research Chair in Social Accountability at the University of Ottawa, ICES Adjunct Scientist, Investigator at the Bruy\u00e8re Health Research Institute, and Clinician Investigator at The Ottawa Hospital.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhile there is enormous enthusiasm for psychedelic-assisted therapy as a new mental health treatment, we need to remember how early and limited the data remains for both the benefits and the risks,\u201d adds Myran.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Published in the journal<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> JAMA Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, researchers analysed health data for people aged 14 to 65 years old living in Ontario from 2008 to 2021.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The authors looked at changes in the number of ED visits involving hallucinogens over time, along with the risk of being diagnosed with schizophrenia after such visits.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Key findings:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While annual rates of ED visits involving hallucinogens were stable between 2008 and 2012, they increased by 86% between 2013 and 2021.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Within three years of an ED visit involving hallucinogens, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4% of individuals were diagnosed with schizophrenia, compared to 0.15% for members of the general population followed for the same period\u2014a risk 21 times higher.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Individuals with ED visits involving hallucinogens were at <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4.7 and 1.5 times higher risk<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of schizophrenia respectively, compared to individuals with ED visits involving alcohol and cannabis.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The authors emphasize that their findings do not establish a causal link between hallucinogen use and schizophrenia and that much more information is needed about risks associated with different types and use patterns of hallucinogens. However, the study highlights risks associated with hallucinogen use that requires ED care and potentially in individuals with underlying susceptibility to psychosis or schizophrenia. The authors also emphasize the importance of further studies and public health measures to better understand and mitigate these risks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cClinical trials of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy have safeguards, such as excluding individuals with a personal or family history of schizophrenia and close monitoring while participants use hallucinogens.
