In a cohort of almost half a million people receiving home care services between 2010 and 2018 in Ontario, Canada, researchers defined \u201clanguage concordance\u201d as a patient who received primary care from a family physician who spoke their language.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While the risk of emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations and mortality decreased for Allophones\u2014people speaking a language other than English or French\u2014when they received language-concordant care, outcomes were no different for Francophones.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ab\u00a0Interestingly, outcomes for Francophones were not impacted by whether they received language-concordant or language-discordant primary care,\u201d says Michael Reaume, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">resident physician in internal medicine at the University of Manitoba<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cWe think that the finding is because sixty-one percent of Francophones in the study did in fact receive care from French-speaking family doctors.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis means that relatively fewer Francophones were at risk of experiencing poor outcomes.
