Medical practice is not easy because of its inherent widespread uncertainty. Some questions are settled eventually through clinical trials, whereas others are impossible to resolve. Between these 2 extremes rests a large grey area where physicians must exercise their judgement. Good clinical judgement has been prized since the time of Hippocrates and will continue to be important for many years to come. However, practical tips for improving judgement cannot always be found in MEDLINE, a textbook or a colleague.
