Dr. Andrew Howard is a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon and clinician scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children and an associate professor in the departments of surgery and health promotion, management, and evaluation at University of Toronto. His primary academic focus is on minimizing the effects of trauma on children. He leads a research program on the prevention of road traffic injuries and sports and leisure injuries for child occupants and pedestrians. He has had continuous national peer reviewed funding for many years and has completed randomized trials and observational studies evaluating the effectiveness of injury prevention strategies in the community. He leads the health and safety theme of the Auto21 NCE which has supported the development of innovative child safety seats now marketed across North America and beyond. He has a strong and sustained collaboration with the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa which supports training of surgical residents in ten countries from Ethiopia to Mozambique. He is president of the Paediatric Specialties Association at Sickkids, leading the most successful surgical alternative funding plan in Canada.
