Ontario Stroke Registry: Secondary Prevention Clinic Databases

The Ontario Stroke Registry (OSR) Secondary Prevention Clinic (SPC) databases include information on patients with a previous history of probable stroke, stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) who were seen at participating SPCs in Ontario between 2006 and 2012. These databases hold information on more than 45,000 SPC visits (includes visits from 8 of 21 SPIRIT sites with partial-visit data entered).

The OSR SPC databases capture information on:

  • Patient demographic characteristics
  • Referral information
  • Diagnosis
  • Investigations
  • Assessments
  • Patient medications
  • Referrals to other clinics and physicians

OSR SPC data collection includes two components:

  • Stroke Performance Indicators for Reporting Improvement and Translation (SPIRIT) SPC Data
SPIRIT SPC data were voluntarily collected by participating secondary stroke prevention clinics in Ontario between 2006 and 2011. Consecutive patients with a previous history of probable stroke, stroke or TIA were identified by SPC staff and prospectively entered into the web-based SPIRIT data entry system. This component includes information on 29,788 visits.
  • Ontario Stroke Audit SPC Data
The Ontario Stroke Audit SPC project was a population-based retrospective chart abstraction review that collected information on all consecutive patients seen at Ontario SPCs between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012. This component includes information on 16,487 visits.
