Share

The ICES board of directors recently announced some changes in its composition, with the retirement of board chair Catherine Zahn after six years of dedicated board service, along with welcoming the appointment of Matt Anderson to board chair and the addition of Kevin Smith as a new board member.

“Catherine Zahn has been an outstanding board member for ICES from the very beginning,” commented ICES CEO Michael Schull at the July meeting of the board. “She brought her many talents to bear as a board member, including her experience as a clinician, her skills as an administrator of a complex healthcare organization, and her deep understanding of the healthcare system more broadly.”

New board chair Matt Anderson has been working in healthcare since 1992. He rose quickly to leadership positions, becoming chief information officer of University Health Network (UHN) in 1998. In 2000, he became a vice-president at UHN and in 2004 was named one of Canada's Top 40 under 40 by the Globe and Mail. In 2008, Matt was named CEO of the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). In 2010, he became CEO of William Osler System, overseeing a $655 million budget, 5200 full-time and part-time staff and 850 physicians in a hospital system of more than 850 beds. Matt became president and CEO of Lakeridge Health in November, 2016.

New board member Kevin Smith is president & CEO of University Health Network (UHN), Canada’s largest research hospital. Kevin has spent his career at the interface of the university and academic hospital and is passionately committed to the mission of education, research and exemplary clinical care. Kevin is a pioneer in advancing integrated care models. His work and leadership have resulted in the expanded introduction of quality-based procedures and bundled funding initiatives by Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Educated in Canada, the U.S. and Great Britain, Kevin began his career in medical education, followed by leadership roles in university administration, academic hospitals and health systems. He is professionally certified in corporate governance by the Institute of Corporate Directors and the Harvard Program in Effective Governance.

The ICES community thanks Catherine Zahn for her years of service, and is pleased to welcome Matt Anderson and Kevin Smith to their new roles.
