ICES Research Video Series featuring ICES adjunct scientist Natasha Saunders

Share

Dr. Natasha Saunders discusses a recent study she led at ICES using secure linked data accessed through a partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The study showed that immigrant children and youth have approximately 1/3 lower risk of suicide or self-harm than children and youth who were born in Canada or who have been in Canada for 10 or more years. Dr. Saunders, who is also a physician and scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children, says that these lower suicide and self-harm rates suggest there may be protective factors among immigrant children and youth that mental healthcare providers and planners could learn from and build upon in order to improve Ontario's mental health strategy.
