At the recent American Heart Association Scientific Sessions held November 7-11, 2015, ICES scientist Maria Chiu was awarded the 2015 Elizabeth Barrett-Connor Young Investigator Award in Epidemiology based on her ICES research entitled, “Moving to a highly walkable neighborhood and incidence of hypertension: a propensity-score matched cohort study."

Chiu was selected out of five finalists, and was the only Canadian scientist to reach the final round.

The Elizabeth Barrett-Connor Research Award in Epidemiology recognizes excellence in research by early career investigators and trainees and encourages continued biomedical research careers broadly related to cardiovascular function and diseases, including basic science, integrated physiology and clinical problems.
