Damon Scales

Senior Adjunct Scientist (Full Status) ICES Central Primary Care & Health Systems Research Program

Biography

Damon C. Scales received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1997. Following residencies in internal medicine and critical care medicine, he completed his PhD in clinical epidemiology from U of T. He is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at U of T, staff intensivist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute. He is also the program director of the U of T Adult Critical Care Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Scales conducts epidemiological and health services research examining system-level factors that influence the outcomes of critically ill patients. His research also evaluates interventions for improving the quality of ICU care across health systems. He has conducted several large cluster-randomized trials (RCTs) of large-scale quality improvement interventions. Most recently, he helped lead the SPARC (Strategies in Post Arrest Resuscitation Care) stepped-wedge cluster RCT to improve adoption of therapeutic hypothermia for cardiac arrest survivors (N=32 hospitals). He recently was awarded a Fellowship in Translational Health Research from Physicians' Services Incorporated to conduct a stepped-wedge cluster-RCT (N=18 hospitals) of an intervention to improve the application of evidence-based neuroprognostication for cardiac arrest survivors. He is also conducting an individual patient RCT of pre-hospital cooling of cardiac arrest patients by paramedics (the ICE-PACS trial, funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research).
