Bella Martin

Biography

Bella Martin retired from her position as general counsel and chief legal officer at the University Health Network (UHN) in 2018, a position she held for 26 years. As a member of UHN’s senior management team, Martin was involved in the evolution of the organization from a single hospital site to one of the finest health system networks in Canada.

Martin earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from McGill University in 1978 and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Ottawa in 1981. After holding several junior positions in hospital administration, she returned to university in 1985 to study law at UBC. Upon graduation, she clerked for four judges at the Supreme Court of British Columbia and later completed her articles at Borden Ladner Gervais in Toronto. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 1990. Prior to joining UHN, Martin practiced with BLG for two years, and in 1992 became the first in-house hospital counsel in Toronto.
