Merrick Zwarenstein, MBBCh, MSc, MSc
Dr. Zwarenstein joined ICES as a Senior Scientist in 2002. He also holds positions with Continuing Education and the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, as well as at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he is cross appointed to the Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research Program. Dr. Zwarenstein is the Senior Scientist at Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital, since 2006, contributing to establishing—as a key goal for this new institute—the role of global leader in pragmatic randomized trials of important health care and treatment interventions. In 2007, he was elected Chair of the Steering Committee at the Centre for Health Services Sciences (CHSS), Sunnybrook Hospital. Dr. Zwarenstein's other appointments include the Resource Centre for Randomized Trials, Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford, and the Health Systems Research Unit, South African Medical Research Council.
Dr. Zwarenstein completed his medical degree in 1980 and his Masters of Science (Medicine) in 1990 at the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and his Masters of Science in Community Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of Londonin 1987. He is currently registered for a doctoral degree at the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, Sweden.
