"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

Our Workplace
The ICES environment is supportive and encourages creativity and new ideas. ICES people are curious by nature, energized by being on the leading edge, and committed to making a positive difference in health care for Ontarians. But, don’t be fooled by the casual appearance of our workplace, where chinos and T-shirts are the norm. In a given year, there are more than 100 research projects in progress. We work hard to deliver high-calibre results, thrive on camaraderie, and enjoy a culture where there are no dumb questions because inquiry is the foundation of everything we do.
To achieve positive change in the health care system, we initiate query-driven projects, and tackle burning issues by collaborating with a variety of experts from our diverse network of stakeholders, associate scientists and representatives from provincial and national health care organizations. For example, our inquiring minds want to know: “Is colorectal screening utilized appropriately as an effective strategy for early detection of colorectal cancer? Does the use of drugs, such as Cox-2 inhibitors in patients with arthritis, improve outcomes? Are patients who suffered a heart attack getting optimal care? Do persons living in the northern part of Ontario have acceptable access to physician services?”
Our research findings, published in-house and in peer-reviewed journals in Canada and abroad, are highly regarded in the industry.
Our Organization
Many of our faculty are practicing clinicians who bring the grassroots problems of health care delivery to the project table, making the research clinically focused and useful in changing practice. Other team members have statistical training, epidemiological backgrounds, project management or communications expertise. Research teams use expertise from across the organization to maximize outcome, relevancy and readability of each project. The variety of skill sets and educational backgrounds together under one roof creates an interesting mosaic of perspectives that is vital to ICES’ growth and continued success.
