Estimating influenza vaccine effectiveness in the elderly

This study will assess influenza vaccine effectiveness over five influenza seasons (1996-97, 1997-98, 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2003-04).  The study population will include individuals aged 65 years or older who participated in the 1996-97 cycle of the National Population Health Survey and the 2000-01 and 2003 cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey.  The primary outcome will be all-cause mortality.  Hospitalizations for pneumonia and influenza will be a secondary outcome.
