Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), commonly known as angioplasty, is a procedure that can unblock a coronary artery without the use of open-heart surgery. In Canada and elsewhere, the number of PCI procedures has increased dramatically, outpacing efforts to ensure that they are being performed effectively, efficiently and appropriately.
This study proposes to develop (1) performance measures to define and quantify quality of care for PCI among stable coronary artery disease patients and acute coronary syndrome patients, and (2) a hospital report card documenting the quality of care and clinical outcomes associated with PCI procedures performed in Ontario.
