Association of socioeconomic status on detection of dementia and access to dementia care

This is study will determine whether there is inequity in access to care for Ontario seniors with dementia.  Socioeconomic status will be determined using income and education variables, and access to dementia care will be determined by tracking visits to family physicians, dementia care specialists (i.e., neurologists, psychiatrists and geriatricians) and by measuring the use of drugs for dementia.

Socioeconomically disadvantaged seniors are expected to use more health care services.  If inequities exist in access to dementia care in Ontario, then policy makers should be better informed to target screening programs for dementia and to better allocate health care resources.
