Some statins increase risk of diabetes among elderly patients
Toronto (May 23, 2013) Cholesterol-lowering statins are one of the most widely prescribed medications given their well-known benefits in patients at risk of cardiovascular events. However, researchers at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and St. Michael’s Hospital have found some statins may come with a greater risk of diabetes in elderly patients without a history of the disease. Two common COPD drugs have similar increased risk of cardiovascular events
Toronto (May 21, 2013) Two commonly used inhaled medications for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) increase risk of heart attacks, heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine by researchers at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). Intensive-dose statin therapy reduces hospitalization rates in older Ontarians who have had a heart attack
Toronto (May 14, 2013) A new study by scientists at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto shows that intensive-dose statin therapy is effective in reducing repeat hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in older patients who have had a heart attack.
