Electronic Medical Record Administrative data Linked Database (EMRALD)

EMRALD is a database housed at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) that consists of clinically relevant information derived from electronic medical records (EMRs) maintained by family physicians practicing in Ontario. These EMR data can be linked to administrative databases held at ICES.

Currently, EMRALD contains data contributed by more than 350 family physicians (representing more than 500,000 patients). Data is held in accordance with ICES policies and procedures for maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality and in compliance with Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act (Read more about privacy at ICES).

EMRALD data has been used for a variety of projects including:

  • validating methods for identifying patients with particular disease conditions;
  • developing automated, accurate methods for identifying patients with disease conditions within the EMR;
  • providing feedback regarding physician performance on quality indicators for several chronic diseases; and
  • examining wait times for referrals from primary care physicians to specialists.

How to Participate in EMRALD

Time commitment is minimal and participation requires the signing of a data sharing agreement that allows EMRALD to collect your data.

Data collection occurs twice a year and does not interfere with day-to-day clinic operations. By sharing your data with EMRALD, you are participating in primary care research aimed at evaluating our health care system and improving the health of Ontarians.

Physician involvement in EMRALD is voluntary and recruitment is ongoing. Participating physicians are preferred to have had their EMR system for a minimum of two years to ensure that their records are adequately populated.
