Three ICES teams win awards in Canada Health Infoway Data Impact Challenge II
The Canada Health Infoway Data Impact Challenge II awarded three ICES teams for their answers to important questions about health and our health system. After the success of the first Data Impact Challenge, the Data Impact Challenge II put a call out to all Canadians for answer submissions that would “provide actionable evidence to support decision-making, more quickly.” All ICES teams who submitted – Team Western, Team BUGS and Ontario Opioid Investigators – received awards in the $10,000 Best Answer Award category for their question, in addition to the $10,000 Judges’ Choice Award to Team Western, and the $5000 Speed Bonus to Team BUGS.

- Best Answer Award (adverse drug events question) and Judges’ Choice Award
- Question: To what extent does re-prescribing and re-dispensing of culprit drugs contribute to the burden of adverse drug events presenting to Canadian hospitals?

- Best Answer Award (antimicrobial consumption question) and Speed Bonus
- Question: What is the current antimicrobial consumption in a particular sector/unit/common condition?
Ontario Opioid Investigators: Diana Martins (lead), Tara Gomes, David Juurlink, Wayne Khuu, Erin Macdonald, Samantha Singh
- Best Answer Award (chronic opioid use question)
- Question: What proportion of acute opioid users become chronic users? What is the rate of opioid-related deaths among chronic opioid users?
Answer submissions were judged by a panel of data experts and leaders in healthcare and academics, and winners were selected based on the quality of submitted answers. All winning teams shared in more than $95,000 in awards.
